Natural Playground Transformation for Early Years - Southmere Primary Academy, Bradford

Out with the old and in with the new! Southmere Primary Academy is now the home of this fantastic, outdoor, educational play space.

Beginning with a complete blank canvas, before bringing this space to life, there was simply just grass and an old, outdoor classroom in place. The classroom was removed and then began the incredible transformation!

It was an absolute pleasure to work alongside the wonderful Delta team once again, to turn their dream playground into a reality.

Something for everyone!

The goal for this project was to enhance outdoor education, and make the most out of what was once, a large, wasted space.

To do this, we incorporated plenty of playground equipment to cover all kinds of play. For example, we installed a clamber stack to boost physical activity, a stream to encourage water play and so on.

There is something for all children within this playground.

Categorising the space

Due to the size of this space, we were able to really categorise the grounds using different resources and surfacing textures, dividing the playground into different activity areas.

For the majority of the space, we created a large bed of bark, featuring multiple outdoor learning structures, enabling teachers to bring lesson time outdoors all year round.

These structures include one vast outdoor classroom, suitable to potentially hold a full class of children, a rustic hut and also a Woodcutters Cottage.

Fantastic for breakout zones, these structures will be perfect to encourage collaborative learning in different groups.

The rest of the playground

In other areas, we added aspects of construction play, role play and nature play. For these spaces, we incorporated a selection of our freestanding, timber resources, enabling the school to move these around as and when, to where they please.

Construction play offers an opportunity for young children to explore shapes, sizes, symmetry, and counting.

Whereas nature play can really boost a sense of community in schools, as well as stimulating a child’s imagination. Adding planters to any educational environment is always a great way to develop a child’s enthusiasm for the outdoors!
