Natural Playground Design for Early Years Education - Greengates Primary Academy, Bradford

A huge transformation has been made at Greengates Primary Academy.

Working alongside the wonderful Delta Academies Trust once again, together, we included elements of sensory, sand, water, role play and lots more within this design.

A fun and educational spring and summer lies ahead for the early years pupils of this primary school!

Creating a Fun & Educational Playground!

Before the renovation, this educational environment was definitely in need of a glow up.

We removed pretty much everything in sight and replaced it all with newness, with the exception of a few existing resources.

Within this space, we provided multiple surfacing styles to suit each category of play.

For example, we added artificial grass in the physical play section, block paving in the water play area and bark in the natural/role play area.

Not only are these surfacing options suitable for each category of play, but they also add different colours and textures to the playground.

Covering All Aspects of Play!

To ensure that all genres of play were covered, it was decided to include a water play stream, a cobble beach, timber bridge, and lots more. Meaning that the children are now able to enjoy water play, messy play and improve their physical abilities. Along with enhancing many other useful skills!

Water play offers numerous benefits for children, such as, fostering physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development. In addition to this, water play promotes use of both large and small muscles as well as the skills needed to coordinate eye and hand movements.

For physical play within this early years playground, we installed a clamber stack.

Our clamber stacks are brilliant for building a child’s upper body, and physical development.

Children love to clamber, crawl and climb, this apparatus allows just that. These exciting wooden natural play climbing frames are the way of future in climbing play.

A Pop of Colour!

Not forgetting to mention the fantastic aspects of sensory play within this playground!

Colour is all around at Greengates! We incorporated a coloured, mystical fence to surround the majority of the playground. Beyond this fence, we laid a newpour pathway, for parents to access the playground.

Other sensory elements include a coloured roof shelter, and one of our best-selling-coloured teepees!

Sensory play is beneficial for early years as it enhances cognitive development, brain development and various other skills. Among other things, it helps a child gather an understanding of the world, as it provides children with an opportunity to explore through different colours and textures.

Further on from this, we added a barked area, which included messy play resources and a decked area with our Woodcutters Cottage playhouse!
