Outdoor Play Area Redevelopment for EYFS - Salfords Primary School & Nursery, Surrey

Out with the old, and in with the new!

We recently worked alongside Salfords Primary School to redevelop their reception and nursery outdoor spaces, to improve their early years learning and play.

This project is another great example of our ongoing work with the GLF Schools Trust, teaming up once again to create inspiring outdoor spaces for young learners to enjoy and explore.

The existing surfaces were no longer suitable for stimulating outdoor play. Because of this, we removed all existing surfacing and replaced with new.

The schools aim was to create a more dynamic environment with clearly defined zones for water exploration, messy play, sand play and physical activity; each designed to promote early years development through play-based learning outdoors.

Innovative Early Years Playground Zones with Timber Resources and Safe Surfacing

Working closely with the school to design and deliver a playground that meets the needs of the outdoor areas, this project includes a large selection of timber play resources.

The resources are spread across the scheme, separated into different play zones.

Within the area that includes sand play resources, we installed block paving which consists of colours and textures. This is beneficial for sensory exploration through play. Paving within a sand play space offers low maintenance for the staff.

The messy play zone consists of a natural, bark area filled with play-grade bark chippings and surrounded by timber sleeper edging. This surface choice ensures safety amongst the children whilst playing, and also durability.

Last but not least, for the physical play zone, we laid artificial grass, adhered to a rubber base for a natural look, and enhanced safety. Within this space, we repositioned an existing climbing prism to maximise the space provided, and allow more room for new, educational resources.

In other areas, we have resources that allow little ones to engage in role play activities, water play and more.

As well as timber play resources, we also included a track for children to ride their bikes, trikes and other playground vehicles around safely. This was made using thermoplastic line markings and completed with an artificial grass mound in the centre.

Creative Outdoor Playgrounds Designed for Sensory and Physical Growth

To finalise, the completed natural playground design offers a versatile and vibrant, outdoor learning environment that encourages sensory play, physical development, creativity and imaginative exploration.

The combination of natural textures and safe surfacing ensures that the space is both educational, and low maintenance. To further enhance safety, new fencing was installed around the playground, providing a secure environment where children can play freely and confidently.

The children of Salfords Primary School now have access to outdoor fun and adventure, all year round, with areas specifically designed to support the school’s educational goals.
