Natural Playground Design for Early Years Education - Thrunscoe Primary & Nursery Academy, Cleethorpes

A Playground That Has It All

The early years play area at Thrunscoe Primary & Nursery Academy has been redesigned into a vibrant environment that encourages imagination, adventure and excitement. This project features a diverse range of play experiences which offer endless opportunities for outdoor learning and play.

Cross the Bridge to Creative Play

The playground gates open onto an area surfaced with artificial grass, featuring Grass Topped Storage Benches that provide children with a comfortable place to sit, read or immerse themselves in imaginative play with figurines.

This area is met by a bespoke timber bridge which is situated over a water stream and cobbled beach. The bridge extends to a decked area featuring a bespoke shelter with a burnt wood finish and complete with integrated bench seating. This area provides a space for children to engage in imaginative and creative play while also encouraging group interaction.

Hands-On Fun Through Messy Play

Following round from this, we added an open area featuring a large sandpit with a bucket pulley system to encourage further interactive play. The sandpit provides great sensory stimulation and supports the development of fine motor skills through hands on, messy play.

We also added a dedicated messy play area located next to the sandpit, enclosed by raised planters and complete with a bespoke archway entrance. This area was enhanced with a range of our handcrafted timber resources, including a Messy Play Table, Weights & Scales Table, Three-Tier Store, and Messy Corner Kitchen, creating an interactive and immersive play environment.

Racing Around Outdoors

Another section of the playground was transformed into a trike and buggy track surrounding a patch of artificial grass. This area promotes physical activity and supports the development of gross motor skills.

A bespoke trike and buggy store was also added to house the bikes and help keep the playground tidy.

To further maintain an organised outdoor space, a bespoke dress up hut was also featured close to this, providing a place for children to hang coats and jumpers during outdoor play in the warmer weather.

Spaces for Play and Expression

We introduced a construction area, featuring a Builder’s Yard and Skip & Blocks, to inspire imaginative role play and enable children to build and create structures.

Opposite this space, a raised decking stage with Toddler Timber Stools was added to encourage performance, support self-expression and help build confidence within the children.

The final section of the playground leads through an open bed of artificial grass, where sensory panels fixed to the timber fencing offer further opportunities for inclusive play and hands on exploration.

At the far end of the open space, an additional messy play area offers more opportunities for creative and social play.
