Natural Playground Design - Eastfield Primary Academy, Immingham

The weather is picking up and the children are getting outdoors.

There’s nothing better than outdoor play in the sunshine!

Recently, we completed this fantastic natural playground design at a local primary school.

Eastfield Primary wanted an area with a sense of adventure, and lots of learning opportunities for early years education. With all the elements added, we think it was a huge success!

From sand play to water play, this playground contains a variety of play genres to keep children entertained all day long.

Bringing the design to life!

To bring this design to life, we started by removing all existing structures, surfacing and even timber resources. Removing all of the above meant we then installed all new surfacing and playground equipment.

Adding an array of timber resources throughout the playground, these offer messy play, construction play, role play and more. The children will definitely remain occupied with their mud kitchen and builders yard!

In other areas, we installed a sand play unit, built with boulders and timber sleepers. This vast structure is fantastic for encouraging team building on the playground, and also for learning different weights and measures. Who doesn’t love a bit of sand play?

Opposite the sand unit, we generated a bike track with a new pour roadway, and an artificial grass mound in the centre of the track. A section of playground for children to ride bikes, trike and roll up and down the grass mound. Not forgetting to mention the Park and Ride Unit, allowing children to park up their bikes and scooters after use.

Fun & Educational!

In other areas, we added a barked area, consisting of a digging pit and messy play resources, allowing children to keep their mud play separate from the rest of the playground. The kids of Eastfield are already loving making mud pies at play time!

Surfacing used in other areas include block paving, artificial grass, decking and resin-bound stone. Not only does this selection provide purpose for each specific zone of the playground, but having variety also offers sensory values due to the different textures, and also a great visual appearance.

Last but certainly not least, we decided to add a part of the playground where children can go to sit, read, relax, and learn. To create this, we included our rustic Woodcutters Cottage, built onto a raised deck with a boardwalk leading up to it. Below the boardwalk, we also installed a water play stream and cobble beach.
