Natural Playground Design - Grange Lane Infant Academy, Doncaster

This huge playground has had a major makeover!

When we first visited this school, the playground was made up of mostly artificial grass and timber resources. This soon changed as we worked alongside the staff at Grange Lane to bring their visions to life.

To begin the design process, it was decided to remove all existing surfacing and replace it with new, adding texture and definition to such a large space. Surfacing laid includes artificial grass, block paving, new pour and wet pour.

As well as this, we included a variety of new resources and playground equipment to create lots of new learning opportunities for the children.

We also made sure to add elements of physical play, water play, role play, messy play and more; meaning there is definitely plenty to keep these early years children entertained at play time!

A huge space to work with!

Taking centre stage of the playground is a barked area with sleeper edging. Within this area, we combined physical play with nature by installing a natural clamber tree. A fantastic challenge for children to test their physical abilities whilst playing with friends.

To surround the barked area, we laid a roadway, made up of mainly new pour surfacing, with the addition of other textured surfacing and a timber ramp. This large roadway allows children to safely take a leisurely ride around the entirety of the playground.

Alongside the roadway, we added two storage units for the children to safely place their bikes and trikes inside after use. Inclusive of heavy-duty PVC covers, ensuring safety of the playground equipment.

Water Play!

As this is such a large playground, we was able to fill it with such a wide variety of play options; including the water play areas. One of these features a water play stream, a cobbled beach, and a bespoke timber bridge.

To the other side of the playground, the additional water play area includes outdoor play resources such as our H-Shaped Water Wall and Sand and Water Play Tray Table.

Both of these spacious areas are perfect for multiple children to learn through play together at one time, enabling them to improve independence and also enhance their social skills.

Learning Through Play

In other areas, we added elements of sensory through role play and nature play. To do this, we installed a timber stage with a coloured lexan roof, allowing natural sunlight to shine through, reflecting colours onto the ground.

Throughout the entire scheme, we also added as much plantation as possible; allowing children to plant and pot their very own flowers and even vegetables if they so wish.

Last but certainly not least, to complete the playground, we installed a large nash shelter. This creates an indoor/outdoor learning space that allows children to play and learn all year-round. Complete with our hand-made PVC covers, that can be rolled up or down, this versatile learning space also protects the children from harmful UV sun rays.
