Riverside Children's Centre now features a vibrant sensory playground and outdoor learning space. After a full garden transformation, the area offers a safe, stimulating environment for active play, creativity, and early years development.

Newby Leisure worked with the Riverside team to redesign the previously underused space, creating a natural playground that promotes outdoor learning, physical activity, and imaginative play.

The playground includes sensory elements, varied textures, and engaging equipment that encourage movement, social interaction, and creative exploration, supporting children’s physical and cognitive development.

Sensory & Musical Play Features

Sensory play was a key focus of this natural playground design. Sensory play is great for fostering children’s curiosity while supporting fine motor skills and early brain development.

This exciting new playground includes a bespoke sensory pod with textured panels, a path of interest made from different colours and materials, tactile fence panels, and a coloured Lexan tunnel. Not forgetting to mention our brand-new, freestanding, Sensory Adventure Den!

Musical play instruments were also installed, allowing children to explore sound and rhythm during outdoor play times. Outdoor musical equipment is a great way to boost creativity and encourage self-expression.

Together, these features create a rich, multi-sensory environment that encourages exploration, creativity, and learning through play!

Musical Equipment for Early Years

Balance, Coordination and Active Learning

Encouraging physical development was another important aspect during the process of this playground design. Freestanding physical play resources were installed to help improve balance, coordination and confidence.

One of those including Newby Leisure's popular Grass Topped Physical Activity Blocks, positioned on artificial grass with a cushioned rubber base for added safety. Artificial grass was chosen for this space as it is hard-wearing, and this is an area that will be intensively used!

Surrounding the grassed area is a wet pour roadway where children can ride bikes, trikes and scooters in a designated space. Allocated parking bays and a storage shed were also added specifically for the children's playground vehicles.

Playground Surfacing and Outdoor Learning Spaces

A combination of high-quality playground surfacing has been used to create a safe, durable and visually engaging outdoor environment. Stone resin, artificial grass and wet pour surfaces define different play zones while ensuring everyday safety and durability.

Having the correct surfacing for your playground is really important for child safety. At Newby Leisure, we take pride in making sure that all surfacing is laid with care and attention to detail.

Planters have also been integrated into the playground to support outdoor learning and nature-based play, giving children the opportunity to interact with plants and natural materials. Planters can really boost a sense of community in schools!
