Early Years Playground Transformation - Prudhoe West Academy, Prudhoe

A natural redesign inspiring outdoor exploration and play!

With a complete transformation ready for the warmer seasons, this outdoor space now offers the children at Prudhoe West Academy enhanced opportunities for creative exploration, messy play, physical activities and more! We captured just how much this playground is being enjoyed on our revisit to the school on a sunny spring day.

Big Fun for Little Explorers

The entrance of the playground is met by a stone resin path which leads through the different areas of the grounds.  This path circles a patch of artificial grass which showcases a bespoke climbing frame which encourages active play. This play structure includes a slide and monkey bars, providing early years children with opportunities to develop gross motor skills, build confidence, and stay physically active.

The different play zones are arranged around this central feature, creating a well-organised and engaging play environment. A coloured roof stage was included to bring vibrancy to the playground and provide a space for performance and imaginative play. This structure not only enhances the visual appeal of the playground but also helps with self-expression and language development.

Messy Hands, Busy Minds

A dedicated messy play area was included to promote hands on learning and support sensory exploration. This area features a bespoke mud kitchen, digging pit, Weights & Scales Table, Messy Play Table and a Three Tier Storage Unit. This area is finished with a bark surface, enhancing the natural, messy play aesthetic. Messy play is essential for supporting sensory development and encouraging creativity in early years children.

Two additional bark-covered areas were incorporated into the design, one featuring a Mini Bug Hotel alongside log seating for down time and another with two Coloured Teepees providing a sheltered space for reading and group discussions.

From Sandcastles to Storytime

Another eye-catching structure within this playground is the large sunken sandpit which is surrounded by mystical fencing and enclosed by a polycarbonate roof. This is the perfect secluded space for digging and building, while providing protection from the sun’s rays and the noise of energetic playground activities.

A raised decking area holds a bespoke timber treehouse, enhancing opportunities for outdoor imaginative play. The structure inspires creativity as children use it to create their own play ideas, scenarios, and adventures.

To further inspire creativity, an area has been added featuring Mark Making Tables and Reading Cupboards. This inviting space encourages early literacy, storytelling, and creative expression, while supporting mark making and fine motor skill development.
