Outdoor Play Area Redevelopment for EYFS - Eastborough Academy, Dewsbury

Where adventure comes to life!

Following a recent transformation, Eastborough Academy now offers an enhanced outdoor environment designed to inspire active play and exploration. Working alongside Delta Trust, we created a space focused on supporting early years development, providing opportunities to build essential physical, social, and cognitive skills in a stimulating outdoor environment.

Building Confidence Through Active and Creative Play

As you enter the playground, a stone resin path leads the way past interactive chalkboards, mirrors, and weaving panels, introducing opportunities for creativity and exploration from the moment you enter the space. The pathway frames a dedicated artificial grass area designed for active play, featuring a clamber stack and climbing wall that encourage physical development, coordination, balance and confidence within early years children.

Another area displays a role play construction play zone. Finished with a stone resin surface and fully equipped with a Builders Yard, Skip and Blocks, and Giant Scales, the space inspires imaginative play while supporting communication and problem-solving skills. Positioned beside this is a messy play area offering valuable opportunities for hands-on learning through play. It includes a Woodcutters Cottage, Three Tier Store, Mud Kitchen, and digging pit, creating a diverse environment where children can explore, experiment, and get creative outdoors. The space is finished with bark flooring, a practical and low-maintenance surface that does not require cleaning after use.

A Natural Landscape for Sensory Discovery and Play

A timber boardwalk extends over a play stream, enhanced with carefully placed planting and boulders to create a naturalistic setting. The boardwalk continues into a sandpit area featuring a chain and pulley system. Sand play provides valuable opportunities for sensory exploration and supports the development of fine motor skills. This area was complete with a Three Tier Storage Unit, a practical solution for maintaining a tidy playground and a Sail Shade Shelter, offering a comfortable, shaded space for rest and downtime during outdoor play.

An Outdoor Setting for Expression and Exploration

Finally, a Nash shelter provides a versatile covered space for creativity and physical play. Equipped with Mark Making Tables, a Three-Tier Storage Unit, a Storyteller’s Chair, and Timber Stools, the area encourages imaginative storytelling and hands-on creative expression. Grass-Topped Physical Activity Blocks introduce an additional physical challenge, while a timber stage completes the space, offering a platform for performance, self-expression and confidence building with early years children.

This playground is sure to inspire the children of Eastborough Academy to get outside and stay active all summer long!
