This natural playground design transforms an early years play space into a bright, engaging environment full of fun and adventure for endless outdoor play this summer!
The main feature of the playground is a timber clamber stack set on artificial grass. Designed to encourage active play, this structure supports the development of gross motor skills and helps build confidence in climbing for early years children. The artificial grass surface helps create a secure and durable play area, providing cushioning for physical activities.
This grassed area is enclosed by a circular stone-resin roadway with road markings, providing the perfect addition to further encourage physical activity as children ride trikes around the designated track.
A pathway of interest was added leading to the rear of the playground, where planters and a Mounted Mirror were incorporated to create a natural and visually appealing aesthetic. The pathway of interest introduces a sensory element to the space through a combination of contrasting surfacing materials, providing a variety of textures and visual stimuli for children to explore.
Close to this, a timber bridge extends over a water-play stream, creating an engaging opportunity for children to explore the properties of water and participate in hands-on sensory play. To offer further water play opportunities, we added Water Play Chutes which are perfect for outdoor science lessons to learn about how water flows in different ways.
Lastly, another striking feature of this design is the bespoke sheltered sandpit. Designed to encourage hands-on sensory exploration, it supports the development of fine motor skills through engaging sand play. Perfect for early years settings, the sheltered structure also creates a calm space where children can enjoy quieter play away from the noise and activity of the main playground.
The children of William Stukeley Primary School will enjoy a bright, natural playground filled with adventure, active play, and sensory exploration this summer. From climbing and trike riding to water play, sand exploration, and quiet sheltered spaces, the design offers endless opportunities for fun, learning, and outdoor discovery.
