A woodland space redesigned into an enchanting playground to inspire outdoor learning experiences.
Newby Leisure transformed this school’s outdoor play area into a unique space where children can explore, play and experience adventure and excitement. This new playground offers lots of educational prospects featuring a variety of different opportunities to learn through hands on outdoor play.
The first section of the playground features a large artificial grass area designed for active open play. Within this space, we installed a mini timber trail to encourage children to challenge their physical abilities while developing balance and coordination. A ¾ Climbing Prism was also added, providing opportunities for climbing and clambering, supporting further physical development and active play.
Alongside this area, an H-Shaped Water Wall creates an engaging outdoor water play experience, helping to support cognitive development in early years children through sensory exploration. The feature also encourages learning about the natural properties of water and how it moves and flows.
A dedicated messy play area was incorporated to provide children with a space to fully engage in hands-on play, offering valuable opportunities to explore and learn about different textures through sensory experiences. This area is surfaced with rubber mulch and bark to create a natural aesthetic while also providing a durable, low-maintenance surface that does not require cleaning after use.
Within this area, we included a digging pit, a Weights and Scales Table, and a sandpit with a built-in pulley system, creating an engaging construction role-play environment that encourages imaginative play.
To encourage creative performance play, we incorporated a rustic stage with a Mounted Mirror, helping to build children’s confidence in socialising, self-expression and performing with others. Toddler Timber Stools were positioned at the viewing end of the stage, creating a welcoming space for children to watch performances while still engaging in social interaction and group play.
The large mature trees within this area create a natural woodland setting and whimsical atmosphere, enhancing the overall aesthetic of the newly transformed play space. A timber boardwalk embedded within these trees leads through a personalised archway into a secluded section of the playground, enclosed by mystical fencing. This multipurpose barked area is fully equipped with musical elements to encourage auditory stimulation, along with a Storyteller’s Throne and Stools designed for reading and storytelling activities. A Coloured Teepee was also included, creating dedicated and sheltered area for down time.
Blending imaginative play with educational value, this transformed woodland playground provides children with an immersive outdoor environment designed to support physical, sensory, social and creative development.
