Adding depth and definition to a large space using natural elements and timber play resources.
When we first arrived at the school, the existing playground was a simple, open space with a couple of outdoor shelters,
To create an exciting, but educational place for these primary school children to play, we incorporated elements of physical play, sand and messy play, role play and lots more.
To brighten up the space, we kept the majority of the existing pavement, and installed artificial grass in some areas and tegula block paving and a barked area in another. Adding different surfacing options is great for allowing children to explore a variety of textures.
For resources, we decided to include a variety to ensure that there was something for all children to enjoy. From mud kitchens, to digging pits, adventure trails, chalkboards, playhouses, storage and more.
Keeping early years education in mind throughout the design process, we wanted to make sure we included playground equipment that would enhance physical ability, motor skills, independence, social interaction and overall educational benefits.
We removed both existing shelters, and replaced those with one large nash shelter, coming off the side of the school to create an indoor/outdoor space to play and learn. This shelter is inclusive of handmade, heavy-duty PVC covers, allowing children use this outdoor learning space all year round.
Other elements featured within this natural playground design include a bespoke stage with a pergola roof, a woodcutters cottage on a deck base, timber matrix and clamber stack, installed onto artificial grass.
