Encouraging outdoor play just got easier for the early years children at Lower Fields Academy!
Working alongside the Delta Academy Trust, together, we turned an empty space into a magnificent outdoor learning environment for children to enjoy, all year round.
Dividing the large area up into spaces that include water play, construction play, role play, physical activity and more. The learning opportunities are endless!
To begin with, the area was made up of tarmac and grass. We dug up the majority of the grass and laid block paving, artificial grass and a new pour roadway.
As well as the new surfacing, we also installed a nash shelter, attached to the school itself, creating an indoor-outdoor space to play and learn, whatever the weather.
In other areas, we added a bespoke/rustic outdoor classroom with a pergola roof and raised decking. The perfect addition to the playground that can be used for absolutely anything. Whether it is used to create a reading den, or just simply used to enhance outdoor play. The opportunities are limitless!
We wanted to incorporate a variety of play equipment within this scheme to increase the number of learning opportunities available for the children.
To achieve this, we installed a clamber stack, situated in the centre of the roadway, which is fantastic for enhancing physical ability. We also included a water play stream, which is great for improving fine and gross motor skills and also to practice sharing with classmates.
Not forgetting to mention the timber stage with a huge, mounted chalkboard fixed to the back, allowing children to engage in role play activities as well as practice mark making skills with friends.
To complete the playground, we added lots of freestanding resources such as digging pits, mud kitchens, seating, storage etc.
