Natural Sensory Playground Design - Regent Farm First School, Newcastle

Regent Farm First School is now the home of adventure and sensory, outdoor play!

With splashes of colour everywhere you turn, this playground is guaranteed to brighten up your day.

Aspects of physical play, role play, messy play and more; there is not much that this playground doesn’t have.

Working alongside the wonderful staff at Regent Farm to create an incredible play space, the main aim was to aid early years education and encourage more outdoor learning through play. We think that the project was a success, don’t you?

Outdoor Coloured Teepee for EYFS

Adding a Splash of Colour..

Starting off with the surfacing, it was decided to completely resurface the majority of the playground using different surfaces to break up each area.

Materials used include artificial grass, block paving, and rubber new pour. All of which are fantastic for areas that will be intensively used by the children, as they are designed to withhold the test of time.

To really bring this natural playground design to life, we added colour to all areas. To do this, we designed a mystical fence with colour windows, which is situated at one end of the playground.

In other areas, we included multiple Coloured Teepee resources, which are fantastic for den making and storytelling.

We also installed a bespoke coloured roof shelter, which is a great addition to the block paved walkway. All of the above unique structures add sensory values to the playground, as natural light shines through, generating colourful reflections on the ground.

Learning Through Play

To progress outdoor education further, we also decided to include an outdoor classroom. This spacious structure is big enough to seat a full class of children, allowing teachers to take lesson time outdoors! The classroom is covered with a lexan roof, meaning is it suitable for learning all year round; and it also has a ramp upon entry, allowing wheelchair access.

Towards the other end of the playground, you will find aspects of physical play and messy play. To build muscle strength and general physical ability, we included a clamber stack and a grass topped activity blocks trail. Both fantastic resources to boost physical education and social interaction at play time.

For messy play, we incorporated planters, a mud kitchen, and a bespoke digging pit. A great spot for children to pot, plant and play, building on gross and fine motor skills whilst doing so.
