Early Years Playground Transformation - Southgate Primary School, Surrey

Looking to make outdoor play, learning, and exploration more fun and engaging, Southgate Primary School teamed up with Newby Leisure to bring their ideas to life. It was great to be given the opportunity to work alongside the wonderful team at GLF Schools once again.

Their wish was to create something more exciting by adding different play spaces throughout the area, designed to support various stages of development and encourage hands-on, creative learning.

To do this, we introduced themed zones throughout the playground for each category of play.

During our first visit to the school, this space included a large field of artificial grass with fixed climbing apparatus, and other old timber products, along with playground equipment. The existing space was flat, underutilised and lacking purpose.

To start the process of bringing their visions to life, we ripped out anything existing within this area, and replaced it with new. This includes new surfacing, and all playground equipment.

A Fresh Look for Outdoor Learning

Working closely with the school leadership, we completely transformed the space. To start with, we began preparing the grounds for new surfacing to be laid throughout.

As it was not necessary to completely remove the existing shelter, we decided to upgrade it, cladding it with new timber and also installing a polycarbonate roof and heavy-duty PVC covers. Not only does this space provide a safe place for children to play all year round, but it also fits in with the theme of the rest of this brand-new, natural playground design.

For the surfacing throughout, we used a mixture of textures and colours, including bark, rubber, artificial grass and paving. Each of these serving a purpose and supporting different types of play and learning.

We then began to add natural play features, such as water walls, adventure units, reading pods and more.

Outdoor Learning Zones for Every Child!

Moving on to the categorised sections of the playground; each zone offers unique features to support early years development through outdoor, learning through play.

These sections include water play, for sensory and motor skill development, a messy play corner to inspire creativity and den-making to encourage teamwork and imagination. Just to name a few!

Categorising the playground is not only helpful for the children, but it also ensures organisation and makes it easier for outdoor lesson planning.

A path of interest scatters through the grounds offering a track for the children to utilise their bikes and trikes safely around the playground, whilst not interfering with the other play zones.

In addition to the path of interest, there are two artificial grass mounds, surrounded by a stone resin roadway. An exciting and challenging element to the riding experience!

Built to Inspire!

Other play zones include a physical activity area, alongside areas for construction play, role play, sand play and even mark making. There’s something to engage and excite every child in this playground!

The successful implementation of this project has transformed the playground into an interactive outdoor environment that promotes engaging, learning through play all-year-round. A place to play thar ensures durability and long-term benefits for both children and teachers.

A versatile and inviting natural playground design that enhances early years, outdoor provision!
