Get out! Get Active! ... This summer with Newby Leisure.

Stay active with Newby Leisure this summer!

The summer holidays are here and what better time to get active and make the most of the outdoors!?

During the course of the six weeks holidays, Newby Leisure will be offering hints, tips and advice to stay active while school is out!

Amazingly, only 1 in 20 people are getting the right amount of exercise on a weekly basis. As always, we can blame this on homework, being tired or the most common distraction amongst children... computer games!

Did you know, building activity into your day helps to keep the heart healthy, reduces the risk of illness and helps build strong bones? Children aged 5 - 16 years need to be active for at least 60 minutes per day and children under 5 need three hours of activity a day. So, with the summer months here, let's go out and explore!

Activity doesn't need to be expensive either. The secret to this is using every opportunity to get active. Go walking, play sport at the park, skip, make your own DIY bootcamp and invite friends to join in, play for hours on adventure trails, there really are no limits. And don't forget to look in you local paper for free activity fun days.

When playing out, it's important to mix up your routine. Don't try and persist with activities you don't want to be involved in as you will get bored easily, look for something that offers you a challenge or something you're good at and concentrate on it for 60 minutes a day, it's really not a long time and will give you the rest of the day to do other things, like helping Mum and Dad do the washing up? .... Ok, maybe not.

Learning during the holidays will keep brains active as well. This doesn't necessarily mean writing poems or trying to add up sums, just by going outside and considering other aspects of physical learning is all any child needs to stimulate the brain.

Children should always play safe though. Be aware of traffic hazards, big drops or hard surfaces ... they will hurt!

Remember:

  • make friends

  • develop imagination

  • improve confidence

  • be aware of risks

  • concentrate and communicate
