Natural Playground Design for Early Years Development - Hookstone Chase Community Primary School, Harrogate

Natural Playground Design for Early Years Development - Hookstone Chase Community Primary School, Harrogate

A complete overhaul has been carried out for Hookstone Chase!

It has gone from a tired and used space and developed into a fantastic playground design for the children to enjoy as they learn through play.

This area consists of multiple natural elements to inspire more outdoor learning for early years development.

Outdoor classrooms for schools

Outdoor Classrooms for Schools

The teachers of Hookstone Chase are now able to take lesson time outside, thanks to the new rustic, outdoor classroom that has been incorporated into the scheme.

Designed with bench seating, enabling up to 15 children to sit inside as they learn. It's the perfect spot to read a book!

This roofed classroom is installed onto block paving, a durable safety surfacing; and it is suitable for use all year round.

Natural Water Play

Sweeping over the majority of the grounds is artificial grass; a fantastic option for areas that are intensively used.

Although it is artificial, it creates a natural and attractive finish to the playground.

Embedded into the grass is a water play stream, the focal feature of this design. Children will improve their gross and fine motor skills as they pump the water down the stream.

Water play is a great way to encourage social interaction on the playground. Perhaps children can gather in teams and use the stream to race a toy boat?

Outdoor Play Resources

Breathing new life into the playground, timber planters are dotted around this space; allowing children the opportunity to plant their very own flowers and/or vegetables.

As the children engage in nature play activities, it will boost their creativity and imagination. Playing with nature is a brilliant way to reduce stress levels and improve hand-eye coordination.

Other elements featured in this playground include outdoor storage solutions, encouraging children to maintain a tidy play area.

There is also a sandpit and skip with blocks, both including heavy-duty PVC covers, allowing the little ones to engage in construction play at break times.
